When trying to connect with putty are you using windows 8.1 or newer? If so there is some initial set up if you are using a different computer than the ones supplied at the July workshop. If it is the ground station computer provided at the July make sure it is set to a static IP, and make sure it can see the wifi network broadcast by the pi. If the computer does see the wifi network broadcast by the pi make sure the computer is on a static ip, if it is on static IP and you can see the wifi network make sure the blue light on the wifi dongle is flahsing about 1 hz, if not flashing unplug and re plug the wifi dongle.
If it is a different computer and it is running Win 8.1 or newer check to see if you can see the wifi network being broadcast by the pi, good chance it will not, if not there are instructions in the documentation from July that explains how to set up an ad-hoc network with newer versions of windows. If the computer has an intel ac-8260 wifi card you will have to change network drivers(if it is the intel ac-8260 let me know I can help, had to do this on my person pc) then follow the instructions for setting up an ad-hoc.

If you cannot connect after a Windows update or any securty software update: sometimes an update will change firewall settings and block putty from connecting to an ad-hoc network, you will have to go in and create a firewall exception for putty in windows or the security software, which ever one is blocking putty.
