I wanted to go ahead and start a new thread to tackle one problem at a time. The raspberry pi is not responding to putty or pings. and I do not know where to start troubleshooting. What I do know is that this started after attempting to run the communication on a new laptop. It was returned to the workshop laptop where it continued to act up. Where do I go from here?

You should hook the Raspberry pi up to a monitor and keyboard. Make sure it logs in, then if you have it connected to the Ubiquiti modem try to ping it from your ground station.
Windows: 1. go to startbar 2. type in cmd <- this is command prompt 3. once the command prompt opens up type in: ping 192.168.1.3 <- or whatever you set your IP to on the Pi
Linux/Mac(OSX): 1. open up terminal 2. once the terminal opens up type in: ping 192.168.1.3 <- or whatever you set your IP to on the Pi
If you can get response between the two this is good, try connecting at this point. If it rejects your connection there could be two things that might be wrong. 1. your credentials are wrong (default we have ID: pi pass: raspberry) 2. the ssh-daemon is not running for some reason. If you type in to the terminal a. sudo apt-get update b. sudo apt-get install ssh It should be reinstalled and reset up so that it should run on startup.
Try some of these troubleshooting steps and see where you get stuck. I'm pretty busy now adays but I'll try to help you out when I can.
